“Ātman” is derived from the Sanskrit root “āt” or “aat”, which means self or soul. It is often translated as ‘breath’, ‘true innermost self’ or ‘individual essence’. The term is used to signify the eternal unchanging core of an individual.

The concept of Ātman is one of the most basic concepts of Hinduism which holds a significant importance in various ancient Indian scriptures. In them Ātman is often referred as the supreme self which serves as a focal point for spiritual inquiry and self-realization.

In Hinduism and other religions, practices like meditation and introspection are emphasised to
understand and realise the true nature of our Ātman. By turning inward and transcending the external layers of existence, individuals seek to connect to their innermost self.
